Do Christians have to wriggle very hard to explain this?

That passage is from one of Paul's letters. IMO, Paul had some issues with women of Ephesus being in a position of any power. If you read the entirety of the letters to Timothy you will find that the church leaders in Ephesus were teaching false doctrines. I find little evidence that Paul had problems with women in other cities or churches of the time.
